Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication
The Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional
Communication is designed for several types of students:
- working adults who are employed or who are seeking employment in the field of technical communication but who are not seeking an undergraduate degree or
- students who are majoring in Communication and want to enhance their technical communication abilities (but who therefore cannot pursue the Minor in Technical and Professional Communication) or
- students pursuing a major other than the Communication major who want to enhance their technical communication abilities.
Students enrolled in this certificate receive state-of-the-art training in core professional skills, including technical writing, technical editing, and graphic design. The certificate is especially helpful for those who plan to enter (or re-enter) the workplace and who want to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to technical documentation projects.
Certificate Requirements -- 12 credit hours
The Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication requires 9 credit hours (3 courses), as follows:
Required Courses -- 3 credit hours
Students must complete the following core course:
- CMMU 3120 Technical Communication
Elective Courses -- 9 credit hours
Students must complete any three of the following four courses:
- CMMU 4300 Multimedia Authoring
- CMMU 4410 Science Writing
- CMMU 4510 Usability Testing
- CMMU 4605 Rhetorical Theory for Technical Communication
- CMMU 4620 Health Risk Communication
- CMMU 4681 Communication Issues in the Trial Court Process
- CMMU 4290 Web Design
Grade and Residency Requirements
A grade of B or higher must be earned in each course completed as part of the Certificate (a grade of B-is not acceptable). All of the credit hours for the Certificate must be earned at the University of Colorado Denver.
Application Procedures
Students should apply for the Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication only after the completion of the required courses. To apply, students must complete the "Application Form: Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication."
The form should be returned to Jim Stratman in his mailbox in room 102-A of the Plaza Building, or mailed to him at the Department of Communication, P. O. Box 173364, Campus Box 176, University of Colorado Denver, Denver, CO 80217-3364. Once the certificate is processed, it will be mailed to the student.
Students who are not already enrolled at the University of Colorado Denver also must complete an "Application for Non-Degree Admission." The form should be returned to the Office of Admissions in the annex of the CU Building.
