Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication 

 

The Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional

  Communication is designed for several types of students:

  • working adults who are employed or who are seeking employment in the field of technical communication and are not seeking an ndergraduate degree;
  • students who are majoring in Communication and want to enhance their technical communication abilities, but do not want to purse a Minor in Technical and Professional Communication;
  • students pursuing a major other than the Communication major but want to enhance their technical communication abilities.

Students enrolled in this certificate receive state-of-the-art training in core professional skills, including technical writing, technical editing, and web design. The certificate is especially helpful for those who plan to enter or re-enter the workplace and who want to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to technical documentation projects.

Certificate Requirements -- 12 credit hours

The Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication requires 9 credit hours (3 courses), as follows:

Required Courses -- 3 credit hours

Students must complete the following core course:

  • CMMU 3120 Technical Communication

Elective Courses -- 9 credit hours

Students must complete any three of the following four courses:

  • CMMU 4290 Web Desing
  • CMMU 4300 Multimedia Authoring
  • CMMU 4410 Science Writing
  • CMMU 4510 Usability Testing
  • CMMU 4605 Rhetorical Theory for Technical Communication
  • CMMU 4620 Health Risk Communication
  • CMMU 4681 Communication Issues in the Trial Court Process

Grade and Residency Requirements

A grade of B or higher must be earned in each course completed as part of the Certificate (a grade of B-is not acceptable). All of the credit hours for the Certificate must be earned at the University of Colorado Denver.

Application Procedures

Students should apply for the Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication after the completion of the required courses. To apply, students must complete the "Application Form: Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication."

The form should be returned to Jim Stratman, located in the Plaza Building, room 102-F, or put in his mailbox in room PL 102-A, or mailed to him at The University of Colorado Denver, Communication Department, Campus Box 176, P. O. Box 173364, Denver, CO 80217-3364. Once the certificate is processed, it will be mailed to the student unless other arrangements have been made by the student to pick up the certificate from the program assistant in PL 102C.

Students need to be registered at the University of Colorado Denve as a full-time student, part-time student, or as a non-degreed student in order to register for these classes. To apply as a non-degreed student, fill out the"Application for Non-Degree Admission" form. Return the form, along with your fee, to the Bursar's office located in the North Classroom, Room 1003 to register.
