Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication 

 

The Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional

  Communication is designed for several types of students:

  • working adults who are employed or who are seeking employment in the field of technical communication and are not seeking an undergraduate degree;
  • students who are majoring in Communication and want to enhance their technical communication abilities;
  • students pursuing a major other than Communication who want to enhance their technical communication abilities.

Students enrolled in this certificate receive state-of-the-art training in core professional skills, including technical writing, technical editing, and web design. The certificate is especially helpful for those who plan to enter or re-enter the workplace and who want to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to technical documentation projects.

Certificate Requirements -- 12 credit hours

The Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication requires 12 credit hours (4 courses), as follows:

Required Courses -- 3 credit hours

Students must complete the following core course:

  • 3120 Technical Communication

Elective Courses -- 9 credit hours

Students must complete any three of the following four courses:

  • 4290 Web Design
  • 4300 Multimedia Authoring
  • 4410 Science Writing
  • 4510 Usability Testing
  • 4605 Rhetorical Theory for Technical Communication
  • 4620 Health Risk Communication
  • 4681 Communication Issues in the Trial Court Process

Grade and Residency Requirements

A grade of B or higher must be earned in each course completed as part of the Certificate (a grade of B-is not acceptable). All of the credit hours for the Certificate must be earned at the University of Colorado Denver.

Application Procedures

Students should apply for the Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication after the completion of the required courses. To apply, students must complete the "Application Form: Undergraduate Certificate in Technical and Professional Communication."

The form should be returned to Jim Stratman, located in the Plaza Building, room 102-F, or put in his mailbox in room PL 102-A, or mailed to him at The University of Colorado Denver, Communication Department, Campus Box 176, P. O. Box 173364, Denver, CO 80217-3364. Once the certificate is processed, it will be mailed to the student unless other arrangements have been made by the student to pick up the certificate from the program assistant in PL 102C.

Students need to be registered at the University of Colorado Denver as a full-time students, part-time students, or as non-degreed students in order to register for these classes. To apply as a non-degreed student, fill out the "Application for Non-Degree Admission" form. Return the form, along with your fee, to the Office of Admissions in the Annex of the CU Building located at the corner of 14th and Larimer .
